The proposal is to leave 850 million barrels of crude oil underground in the Ishpingo-Tambococha-Tiputini (ITT) block, on the eastern edge of the Yasuní National Park. To offset this, Ecuador wants to offer Yasuní security certificates (CGY), a type of carbon bonds, even though these will not reduce CO2, but they will prevent emissions.
Ecuador’s goal is to achieve, through this mechanism, an income of USD 6,900 million in 10 years.
However, Roque Sevilla, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the initiative, insisted before his trip to Europe that it requires serious commitment by European countries. "That will be reflected in the acceptance given to the CGY.”
Revenues from the sale of these certificates will be handled through an international trust and thereby generate interest which will support the conservation of 40 national parks and other projects.
Meanwhile, the Ecuadorian campaign is still adding the support of international personalities. This time Rita Levi-Montalcini, Nobel Prize for Medicine, joined. In a letter to the President of the Thirteenth Standing Committee of the Italian Senate, he asked for support to this environmental initiative in Ecuador.

Los impulsadores de la Iniciativa Yasuní-ITT buscan desde hoy consolidar la aceptación entre los países europeos. La delegación ecuatoriana encargada de difundir esta propuesta emprendió el periplo por el Reino Unido y luego continuará por Alemania.
La comitiva nacional está encabezada por el canciller Fander Falconí e integrada por Roque Sevilla, Yolanda Kakabadse y Francisco Carrión. De acuerdo con la agenda, entre hoy y mañana asisten a reuniones con medios de comunicación y varios parlamentarios británicos.
En cambio, el miércoles y el jueves se reunirán con los parlamentarios alemanes, sobre todo comparecerán ante cuatro comisiones del Parlamento de Alemania.
El reto de esta comitiva es el de demostrar la viabilidad de la iniciativa de Ecuador, con la cual pretende ayudar a evitar la emisión de dióxido de carbono (CO2) a la atmósfera.
Para eso la comisión se sustentará en los estudios de factibilidad, los mismos que fueron preparados con la participación de expertos nacionales y extranjeros, y que contó con el aporte de 300 000 euros del Gobierno alemán.
La propuesta es dejar bajo tierra 850 millones de barriles de crudo en el bloque Ishpingo-Tambococha- Tiputini (ITT), en el extremo este del Parque Nacional Yasuní. Para compensar eso, Ecuador quiere ofertar los Certificados de Garantía Yasuní (CGY), una especie de bonos de carbono, aunque con la diferencia de que estos no serán por reducir el CO2, sino por evitar las emisiones.
El objetivo ecuatoriano es alcanzar, a través de este mecanismo, un ingreso de USD 6 900 millones en 10 años.
Sin embargo, Roque Sevilla, presidente del Consejo Administrativo y Directivo de la Iniciativa, insistió antes de su viaje a Europa que se requiere del compromiso concreto de los países europeos. “Eso se reflejará en la aceptación que den a los CGY”.
Los ingresos por la venta de estos certificados se manejarán a través de una fideicomiso internacional y con lo que se genere por intereses se impulsará la conservación de 40 parques nacionales y otros proyectos.
Entre tanto, la campaña de Ecuador sigue sumando adhesiones de personalidades internacionales. Esta vez se sumó Rita Levi-Montalcini, premio Nobel de Medicina. En una carta dirigida al Presidente de la decimotercera Comisión Permanente del Senado italiano, pidió que se respalde a esta iniciativa ambiental ecuatoriana.
