Hungary Supports the ITT Proposal

Hungary supports Ecuador’s proposal to keep the oil reserves located in Yasuní National Park underground.

Hungarian President László Sólyom, who visited Ecuador, stated that the initiative deserves the respect of his country and other nations concerned with environmental protection.

The Proposal would prevent the development of 20 percent of Ecuador’s oil reserves, which are located in ITT in Yasuní National Park.

Sólyom signaled that his country supports the Ecuadorian government initiative to not develop almost one billion barrels of oil in the ITT oil fields.

Ecuador calculates that if it extracted the oil from the ground it would obtain annual benefits of 700 million dollars, and it proposes that the international community compensate the country for half the sum.

Despite their efforts, Ecuador has not received sufficient contributions, so the government is also working to prepare the oil fields for bidding and development.
