As of the early 1990s, virtually all of Yasuni was primary forest. The only human impacts were from the Huaorani: the great, fierce, and knowledgeable native peoples of the Ecuadorean Amazon.

However, in 1994, the American oil company Maxus built an oil road into the Park in the region indicated by the red box.
