Protected Areas according to the World Conservation Union ( IUCN - International
Union for the
Conservation of Nature)
The IUCN defined protected area
as "an area of land or sea especially dedicated to the protection
and
maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural
resources, and managed
through legal and other effective means".
There are 6 IUCN categories of protected areas:
I: Strict Nature Reserve/ Wilderness Area - managed only for science and
wilderness protection.
II: National Park: ecosystem protection and recreation
III: National Monument: conservation of specific natural features
IV: Habitat / Species Management Area: conservation through management
intervention
V: Protected Landscape: landscape / seascape conservation or recreation
VI: Management Resource protected area: sustainable use of natural resources
