"...which as we descend from the still dry leaves down into the humus and then on into the deeper reaches of the soil, are a vast microscopic universe of niches in which there are many species. Even just within a square foot, as shown here, may live into the thousands of small insects, into billions of microorganisms, and large numbers of species intricately connected with one another and together maintaining that ecosystem in balance.

But above all, what is maintained is the biodiversity itself, comprising large numbers of species, each of them hundreds of thousands to millions of years in the making, and in total representing evolution that is exquisitely adapted to that environment."
